Natural History of the Fell

Wildlife

Rabbits and hares are more easily spotted than voles, mice and shrews, but even the more elusive habitants leave tracks and signs. The area around the pond is always a good place to start. You may even be lucky enough to come across a deer but you will have to be extremely quiet. The wet areas harbour both land based and aquatic life such as frogs and newts. Insects such as Damselfly, Dragonfly, Moths, Butterflies and Beetles. In the spring the pond outside is teeming with tadpoles so you can watch their development.

Birds of Beacon Fell

Birds such as the Skylark, Meadow Pippit, Partridge, Curlew and Lapwing are found on the moorland and surrounding farmland, whereas within the woodland and on its edges the Tits, Chaffinch, Willow Warbler, Goldcrest, Bullfinch, Siskin and Crossbill feed and you may be lucky enough to come across the predator species such as the Kestrel, Sparrowhawk, Tawny Owl and Short Eared Owl.

Flora & Fauna

The woodland, moorland, farmland and wet areas provide important habitat for a variety of flora and fauna. Keep a lookout for varieties such as Gorse, Wood Anemone, Red Campion and Heather.
