Courses

Adult and Child Learning

Family Language and Literacy

These courses are aimed at families who would benefit from improving their literacy and/or language skills. They can begin with a 2-3hrs taster course followed by either a 30hr short course or a 60hr intensive course. The courses are flexible in order to meet the needs of parents, children and schools but can include core features such as; making a Story Sack, visiting a library, help your child with reading, strategies for spelling, supporting Standard Attainment Tests (SATs).

Family Numeracy

These courses are aimed at families who would benefit from improving their numeracy skills. They can begin with a 2-3hrs taster course followed by either a 30hr short course or a 60hr intensive course. The courses are flexible in order to meet the needs of parents, children and schools but can include core features such as; maths in the home, supporting SATS, how maths is taught in schools.

Early Start

This course is targeted at 0 - 4yr olds and their parents with a strong emphasis on speaking and listening skills for both the adult and the child. The course has three modules:

  • Baby Talk (0 - 1)
  • Small Talk (1 - 2)
  • Talk Together (2 - 4yrs)

Each module can be offered independently or combined for a mixed aged group.

All the above courses have three core elements:

  • Adult Time - where the adults work on improving their own skills and find out how they can help their children supported by an adult Skills For Life basic skills tutor.
  • Child Time - where the children are given extra support with their own literacy or Numeracy by the school teacher.
  • Joint Time - where the adults and children work together jointly supported by both teacher and tutor.

Keeping Up with the Children

A range of courses, for parents/carers only , that include a:

  • 12hr introductory course
  • 12hr course that focuses on either Literacy, Numeracy or ICT
  • 30 hour Help Your Child with Literacy / Help Your Child with Maths designed to support parents/carers who wish to improve their own literacy or numeracy skills

Group Meeting Intergenerational Family Learning

These are varied and are tailored to meet the interest of the learners. Courses that have been offered include:

  • Rhythm & Rhymes
  • Lads, Dads & Granddads - Family Cooking
  • Art for All
  • Do you Dig This?

Parenting Courses

Again these courses are flexible and can be designed to meets the needs of your parents. Courses that have been run include:

  • Parenting your child
  • Parenting your teenager
  • Help your child at school
  • Raising self-esteem in children
