Although timetable leaflets may appear confusing at first, they are actually quite straightforward once you get used to them.
Use of Abbreviations
Timetables have to fit a lot of information into a small space, therefore they make use of abbreviations. Any abbreviations used will be explained within the leaflet. It is important not to ignore the abbreviations as they can make a huge difference to the information. For example, if you wished to travel from Morecambe to Lancaster University, you may find that some journeys are marked with the abbreviation TD. This means that that particular journey operates in term-time only.
Different timetables for different days of the week.
There will be separate timetables for outward and return journeys ( unless of course it is a circular service). There may also be separate timetables for weekdays, Saturdays, and Sundays.
Bank Holiday Services
On Bank Holidays many bus companies revise their services. It is advisable to contact traveline on 0870 608 2 608, or the operator of the service, for full details before travelling.
Timing Points
A bus may pass many stops along its route, however the timetable will not list them all. It will only list the timing points. Timing points are stops where the driver will check he/she is running to time. A bus may depart the stop later than advertised because it has been delayed (for example by traffic jams) but it should not depart the stop earlier than advertised. By using the timing points you should be able to estimate what time the bus will arrive at your stop. However you should give yourself plenty of leeway and arrive at your stop at least five minutes before you expect the bus to arrive.
What does it mean if a time is not listed?
If there is a gap in the timetable and a series of dots …. is displayed instead of a time, this means that the bus does not stop at that bus stop on that particular journey.
The 24 hour clock
Timetables make use of the 24 hour clock. After midday, times may be converted to the 12 hour clock as follows:
