Lancashire County Council Countryside Services -“Managing and creating opportunities for everyone to enjoy Lancashire’s Countryside”
WE PROVIDE THE FOLLOWING SERVICES
Beacon Fell and Wycoller Country Parks along with
picnic sites
located all around the County, visitor centres, cafes,
easy walks and rides, low mobility trails, events, environmental education,
beautiful views and history. These sites are cared for by our Countryside Rangers
who are there to assist you. We have developed a range of trails around the
County from local easy walks suitable for the less mobile, to long distance
trails such as the Ribble Way. We assist with managing the new right of access
to open countryside. We also have trails suitable for horse riding and cycling.
Please phone us or visit our website for sites, leaflets and information
about all of the above. You can also find out how to become a Volunteer Countryside
Ranger and how to book our all- terrain electric low mobility vehicles.
We carry out the County Council’s Statutory Duties for maintaining the Public Rights of Way Network, signposting and way marking footpaths, bridleways and byways. As well as maintaining the surface of rights of way and dealing with obstructions. If you would like to report a problem on a right of way you can phone, write or submit the report via our website by visiting http:/mario.lancashire.gov.uk. If writing or phoning it is of great help if you can give exact location of the problem. Public Rights of Way are inspected and maintained by our Area Network Officers. Contact us for detailed advice sheets on how we will respond and our timescales for dealing with reports and legal enforcement matters.
The Countryside Service holds copies of the Definitive Map, the Legal Record of Public Rights of Way and is responsible for updating and continuous review of the map. If a way is shown on the definitive map it is conclusive evidence of the publics right along the right of way. There may also be additional rights over land, which have not yet been recorded on the map or there may be rights that are incorrectly recorded. The definitive map can be amended by legal order if evidence of missing rights of way is discovered or to correct errors in previously recorded information. Contact us for detailed advice notes on diverting rights of way, claiming new routes, temporary closures and diversions. These explain the legislation and the service you can expect from us. We also carry out property searches in respect of rights of way, although we do charge for these. These responsibilities are carried out by our Definitive Map Officers.
You can contact us with general enquiries regarding rights of way
process and legislation; much of this information can be viewed on our web site.
Our team of
Countryside Officers
works
right across the County, working in partnership with communities, parishes,
district councils and landowners to deliver
access, conservation and
environmental improvements
. They are key contacts able to provide advice,
put grant packages together and make things happen. If you have ideas and need
assistance please contact us and the appropriate countryside officer will reply.
We are putting considerable effort into developing strategic access initiatives
to improve opportunities for horse riding, low mobility access and access for
all around the urban areas.
The Rights of Way Improvement Plan for Lancashire
guides this work with the support of the Lancashire Local Access Forum.
