Nature Reserves in Lancashire

National and Local Nature Reserves are discussed under Statutory Sites . Here we introduce the other nature reserves in the county managed by a variety of bodies such as the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust and Wildlife Trust for Lancashire, Manchester and N. Merseyside.

Knot

Unlike National and Local Nature Reserves these reserves are not legally protected in their own right. They may, however, have some other status, such as being designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest or identified as a Biological Heritage Site.

Sites in this category form the majority of the nature reserves in the County. Most are open to public access, some may make an admission charge and a few require permission in advance from the site managers. Summary details of a number of these sites are given below. For further information see the relevant organisations web site.

There are other sites in the County which may not be called nature reserves but nevertheless have wildlife interest and can be visited by the public. These are owned or managed by a number of organizations including the (External) Woodland Trust and (External) National Trust . Their web sites give details of the sites you can visit in Lancashire.
