Local Wildlife Sites
Local Nature Reserves (LNRs)
Local Nature Reserves are places with wildlife or geological features that
are of special interest. They give people the opportunity to simply have access
to and enjoy nature or to study and learn more about the natural environment
should they wish to.
LNRs are designated by local authorities with the support of English
Nature. In practice many Local Nature Reserves are also Sites of Special Scientific
Interest.
In Lancashire there are currently 13 Local Nature Reserves covering
183 ha. three of which (32 ha.) are wholly or partially managed by the County
Council.

Limestone Pavement Orders
Limestone pavement is a nationally rare habitat. The most extensive sites are
in northern England. There has been considerable damage to this habitat in the
past through its removal for ornamental stone and use in garden rockeries.
Many sites containing limestone pavement are designated as SSSIs.
The Wildlife and Countryside Act allows additional protection through the making
of Limestone Pavement Orders (LPOs) which make the removal of rock a criminal
offence.
The County Council has made LPOs on all twelve significant areas
of limestone pavement in Lancashire. These Orders cover 827 hectares, 40% of
which is also designated as SSSIs.
