Travellers need reliable and up-to-date information on the choice of travel available to them. We will help people by making travel information easily available at home, before they start their journeys, and at workplaces, hospitals and shopping centres for their return trip. The provision of information for the rights of way network is outlined in the Rights of Way Improvement Plan theme Education and Information Provision.
The County Council has implemented a pilot Urban Traffic Management and Control (UTMC) scheme in the Preston area collecting real-time information on traffic. Real time information is also collected for the public transport Real Time Information Service. Information will be available to bus passengers and car drivers over the internet before the start of their journey to assist them in their travel choices. En route, we will update drivers on road conditions and Park & Ride operations with VMSs and at their destination we will direct them to car parks with vacant places. In the event of incidents on motorways and major corridors, we will keep drivers informed and sign alternative routes. We will also supply timetable and real time information on bus services to mobile phone users.
We will extend the systems and principles to other urban centres. We will also link to other providers including the Highways Agency Transport Information Highway Network, the County Council Emergency Planning centre and the Environment Agency. Better information will allow travellers to make better-informed decisions on their mode and time of travel. Accurate information on public transport will encourage modal shift away from cars, and traffic information will allow the remaining drivers to make the most efficient use of the highway network.
