An elegant structure has been chosen as the winning entry from the design competition for a new bridge to cross the River Douglas. The full press release and images of the top three designs can be viewed here. Thank you to all the local residents and stakeholders that took part in the consultation events during September. REMADE will now be working with partners and key stakeholders to progress the bridge project as part of the development of the Ribble Coast and Wetlands Regional Park.
Three primary schools in Hesketh Bank and Tarleton also took part in an art competition to design a bridge. The winners and runner up pictures can be viewed here. Thank you to all the children and schools for taking part.
Work has started at Fulledge to improve the current recreation ground. The work will enhance the existing features such as the wetland area; significantly improve the drainage of the site; create a new playing field, and; provide new paths to improve access through the site. Work is due to be completed by early summer 2008. Please see this press release for more details.
Great Harwood to Burnley Disused Railway
On Wednesday 12th December 2008 it was announced that the Sustrans Connect 2 project had won The People's £50 Million lottery, the largest ever publicly-decided funding award.
Connect 2 will cost £140m in total and aims to improve walking and cycle routes in 79 communities across the country. Padiham is one of these projects and will receive approximately £300,000 from Connect 2 to create a new greenway along the former Great Harwood - Burnley railway line and improve links towards Padiham and Burnley from the railway.
The lottery funding will be available from January 2008 with 5 years to create the new cycle and pedestrian links.
Some advance work including vegetation clearance, works to bridges and track lifting along the Padiham section commenced in March 2008, expected to be completed in early summer 2008.

Fishwick, Phase 1- Fishwick Recreation Ground
The development of an exciting multi-sports facility on the derelict athletics track off London Road, Preston is now complete. An official opening of the new Fishwick Recreation Ground took place on Saturday 2nd September 2006. The Mayor of Preston, Councillor Bill Tyson cut the ribbon to officially open the site. Activities included racing by (External) Preston Pirates BMX club . The site is open for use by all members of the public. The Recreation Ground has now been awarded green flag status, a national standard for parks and green spaces in England and Wales. More details can be found on the (External) Green Flag website . The flag was raised by the Mayor of Preston on Friday 5th October 2007.
Fishwick, Phase 2/3- Local Nature Reserve
Work on Phase 2 has now been completed and the site is now fully open to the public. An opening event took place on Friday 5th October 2007 after the raising of the Green Flag on Phase 1. The site was officially opened by the Mayor of Preston and a guided walk was conducted by Terry Blackburn, the park ranger.
Phase 3 - Design work is now underway for the extension of the Local Nature Reserve into the Phase 3 Fishwick site.
Planning permission was granted by Preston City Council on 3 April 2006 for the development of a 3m wide cycle track / footpath on the disused railway between the M6 motorway bridge at Ribbleton to Preston Road, Grimsargh. The proposed cycle track / footpath will link with the existing cycle path between West View Leisure Centre and the rear of Sulby Drive in Preston, creating a continuous link between Preston and Grimsargh. Work on the first phase of the cycle path has now started and should be completed in Summer 2008.
River Lune Millennium Park: Aldcliffe to Glasson Greenway
The path was officially opened by County Councillor Clive Grunshaw at Conder Green on 24th June 2006. This was part of an opening event that included organised cycle rides, wildlife walks and other activities.
Following comments and feedback received from the consultation event, held on the 12th October 2006, the outline design for the scheme was revised and finalised. This led to the submission of a planning application for the eastern part of the site in January 2007 (please see the main Within Grove page for details) with an application for the west site submitted in March 2008. Work started on the east part of the site in April 2008 with the main works finishing in July 2008. Landsacping will be completed in November 2008.
The construction works have now been completed and the site is open to the public. The site was officially opened on 21st November 2007 by County Councillor Matthew Tomlinson, Lancashire County Council's Cabinet Member for Planning and Environment.
The Top o' Slate site was officially opened on Thuesday 20th September 2007. After speeches by Hazel Harding (Leader, Lancashire County Council), Nick Hunt (Director Mid Pennine Arts), Wayne Hemmingway and other project partners a procession was led up to the site. Once at Top o' Slate a poetry reading took place before a male voice choir ushered in the lighting of Halo. The site is now fully open to the public.
National Cycle Network 6 - Platts Lodge
