Lancashire County Council’s Road Safety Group are celebrating the first birthday of their latest project.
It is a year since the launch of Small Journeys, a resource aimed at improving road safety for parents, young children, and anyone who is involved with young children. The resource includes a handy A5 booklet for health visitors and a guide aimed at pre-school care providers.
Clare Farrer, Deputy Group Manager said:
“Road traffic accidents are the leading cause of child fatalities and this resource helps ingrain road safety awareness in children from a young age. The involvement of parents means the messages are reinforced at home.
“Small Journeys may be a year old, but it is still as important as ever to keep young children and their parents safe around and on roads. We will continue working with parents and other professionals to ensure this.”
The health visitors’ Small Journeys guide can be used as a toolkit for them to share with prospective and new parents. It includes passenger and child pedestrian safety as well as advice on the use of seatbelts in pregnancy.
The information-packed road safety guide for playschools, childminders and nurseries includes information on pedestrian safety, safer outings with children, child car seats, being seen and much more. It also features A3 pictorial aids that can be used to teach road safety themes such as ‘Stop’. ‘Holding Hands’ and ‘Looking’ and ‘Listening’.
Jill Eckersley, Manager at Busy Bears Day Nursery, Preston said:
“We have found this to be a really useful package. The resource is bright and colourful and the children can identify with the characters.”
Small Journeys was launched as part of the Journeys series of resources. Primary Journeys is currently used in 350 primary schools and Secondary Journeys is due to be launched later in the year.
