Although horseriders only account for a small number of all road users in Lancashire, horseriding is a hobby enjoyed by many and horse ownership is increasing. However, the congested roads and high volume of traffic is a modern day nightmare for the horserider.
Although bridleways are being developed across the County and access for riders is being improved, travelling on the roads is still a necessity, but with this there are risks. And serious ones.
Horses can be unpredictable. Put in a situation with fast, noisy cars, beeping horns and roadside distractions, it's easy to see the danger signs. Motorists can help by slowing down when there is a horse on the road, allowing plenty of room when passing and not sounding their horns, which could startle the horse. All this could help to prevent any unecessary tragedy.
Although only 46 collisions involving horses have been recorded in the County within the last five years, it is thought that many more may have occurred without being reported.
Most drivers are very considerate and sensible. Unfortunately, it only takes one inconsiderate driver for an accident to happen.
We would ask all motorists to give more consideration to horse riders. Please slow down and pass wide to avoid startling the horses. Hopefully we can then avoid any further tragedies.
