WALK TO SCHOOL

NEW - Walk to school 2005 dates also select this link for the 2004 Walk to School competition winners! (PDF 84.2KB)

Walk to School Week is a popular and enjoyable event in the school calendar.
Every year, Lancashire County Council encourages pupils, parents and teachers to leave the car at home and travel to school by another method. Walking (and cycling) is particularly encouraged because of the benefits that it brings.

Walk to School Week is a national event however what makes Lancashire's event extra special is our great competition. Lancashire schools that “ make walk week special” have a chance to win £1000 as well as many runner-up prizes. Over the years, our schools have rose to the occasion and helped to make Lancashire's event one of the best in the country. These are just some of the things that our schools have been up to:

Pupils walking to school in pajamas, or with their coats buttoned up back to front, or wearing special hats or masks that the children have made;

Using Walk to School as a basis for classroom work, for example artwork, written work, discussions about health, fitness, road safety, the environment etc

Pupils, parents and teachers walking to school as a large group, sometimes through fields and countryside;

Teachers walking many miles through the night to reach their school by morning;

Why Walk to School?

Every year, Lancashire County Council encourages pupils, parents and teachers to leave the car at home and travel to school by another method. Walking (and cycling) is particularly encouraged because of the benefits it brings.

Consider the following:

Large numbers of cars parked outside school premises create a hazardous situation for children crossing the road. They also produce a concentration of exhaust fumes and children are among those groups who are most at risk from air pollution.

Children who walk to school with an adult will have more opportunities to practise road safety skills. TravelWise always stresses the importance of adult supervision of younger children.

Walking to school is an excellent opportunity for regular exercise. A recent survey found evidence to suggest that most children do not take sufficient exercise and are therefore at greater risk of suffering ill health when they are older.

Walking to school can be very enjoyable for both adults and children. Many families and schools have said how much they have enjoyed our previous Walk events.
