Services to minority ethnic communities



 

Multicultural services

A County-wide service to minority ethnic communities is provided, with collections of materials in community languages at some larger libraries.

Books

Books in the following languages are available. Titles can be ordered through any library. See the library pages to locate your nearest library.

Dual language children's books, including picture books, are also available.

Books about different cultures are stocked, including a collection of materials on Black writing and history. You can search for these via our catalogue .

There are also booklists available for Asian and African Caribbean categories in our reading lists section .

Newspapers

Asian newspapers are available in some libraries and can be accessed on-line through the People's Network computers available for free public use in all libraries.

Language courses

Language courses on CD and audio-cassette are stocked and can be ordered through all libraries.  You can search for these via our catalogue

Music on CD and cassette

Some libraries stock Asian music on CD and cassette and a range of World music is available through any library.  You can search for these via our catalogue .

There are also lists of Asian music in our reading lists section .

Talking Eyes information newsletter on audio-cassette

A monthly audio-newsletter in 4 Asian languages is stocked at Preston Harris Library and Burnley Library , and can be ordered through any library.

Asian videos and DVDs

Popular Asian videos are stocked in some libraries and can be ordered through any library.  You can search for these via our catalogue

There are also lists of Asian videos and DVDs in our reading lists section .

People's Network Computers

The People's Centres in Accrington , Chorley , Morecambe , Nelson and Preston provide Global Writer software on the People's Network computers, which can be used to write documents in any of around 100 languages.

Arts

A multi-cultural arts programme provides a range of activities in libraries throughout the year.

Enquiries

Information on the library service can be made available in other languages. Staff with Asian language skills are available to help.

Race Equality Scheme

The County Council has a Race Equality Scheme, which incorporates an Action Plan for the Library Service, and is available on the County Council's website
