Web (External) www.prepol.com Established in 1974 and now employing 150 people Precision Polymer Engineering (PPE) designs and manufacturers advanced elastomer (rubber) seals (O-rings and custom parts) for a wide range of industries including aerospace, marine, automotive, electronics and petro-chemical. The company has proven expertise in the following areas: precision O-Rings, technical mouldings, FEP encapsulation, fabric reinforced diaphragms, cylinder line rings, elastomers for extreme environments, design, materials selection and emergency production capacity. PPE was a Queen's Award winner for Innovation in 2006 (and an International Trade Award winner in 2007) for developing a new high performance elastomer material 'Perlast'. The innovation made by a highly complex chemical process, is a specialised polymer with rubber-like qualities and exceptionally high chemical resistance. It is used in seals for tools fitted in semiconductor wafer manufacturing equipment. Traditionally, the seals deteriorate with time and release filler particles which contaminate the wafers being produced. Seals made with the new product do not contaminate the wafers when filler is released. In addition they have a high permeability and long life. Thus a major benefit of the new product is that total seal costs are reduced by up to 75% relative to costs associated with using previous materials. Web (External) www.rolls-royce.com Rolls Royce's connection with Barnoldswick goes back to the war years when the company established a site in Lancashire to develop Sir Frank Whittle's original jet engine designs. Since then the facility has been involved in virtually every Rolls Royce jet engine. In 1987 the company won the Queen's Award for Technological Achievement. Shared between the Barnoldswick and Derby sites the Award was given to the engineering and manufacturing team for the wide chord fan blades for the RB211-53E4 aero engine. The design principle, involved the development of advanced fabrication techniques for the forming, bonding and machining of hollow honey-comb titanium alloy blades. It has since been applied to other Rolls Royce engines including later RB-211s and the current Trent series of turbofans which have evolved from them. Today, the Barnoldswick site is a 24-hour operation with a turnover of £80m a year and with about 800 employees. Equipped with some of the highest tech equipment available within the corporate group Barnoldswick is involved in the design, manufacture, research and development, maintenance and in-service support of gas turbine propulsion systems for civil aerospace, defence aerospace, marine and energy applications. In particular, it manufactures three key components: fan blades, front bearing housings and engine seals. The plant also has a major stake in development for the Joint Strike Fighter. Significant investment has been made over recent years in up-grading the site, buildings and associated equipment and further investment is underway in a major re-design to improve the infrastructure to world-class standards in order to reduce overhead costs and to improve competitiveness.
