Model-Based Estimates of Unemployment for Local Authority Districts and Unitary Authorities:
Model-Based Estimates of Unemployment for Local Authority Districts and Unitary Authorities: To overcome missing and imprecise unemployment data at the district level within the Annual Population Survey - Labour Force Survey, the Office for National Statistics has developed an annual model-based methodology that has enhanced the quality of ILO unemployment at the local level and enabled more reliable and precise unemployment estimates to be produced for local authority districts and unitary authorities. The new estimates are now accredited as National Statistics. The model based unemployment data is only available for total unemployment and is not subdivided by age or sex.

Official Unemployment Figures at the Ward Level:
Official unemployment figures at the ward level are not available, owing to the insufficient sample sizes at that geographical level.

Notes:
Missing Datasets
Owing to a methodological error concerning the Labour Force Survey Statistics, the Office for National Statistics has delayed the publication of the July 2004 to June 2005 dataset until it can be corrected. This undertaking has caused some delay in the publication of data for subsequent quarters. Please refer to the (External) NOMIS realease dates for details.
Reduced Coverage at the District Level and Above
The Annual Population Survey (APS) was introduced in 2004, comprising the annual Labour Force Survey supplemented by an extra boost (the APS(B)), designed to obtain a sample of 500 economically active adults in each local authority district. As a cost saving measure, the APS(B) was scaled back in mid-2005 and was withdrawn from January 2006. This means that Official Unemployment data at the district level (and possibly some larger geographies for data broken down by age and gender) will no longer be available for the majority of districts in Lancashire owing to small sample sizes for the data ending in the year to March 2006. APS estimates for the April 2005 to March 2006 period onwards will therefore revert to the sample used for the previous annual local area Labour Force Survey. The last APS period which contains APS(B) cases is that covering January to December 2005, as this is the last period for which a complete year's boost is available.

Claimant Count Figures

Claimant Count data no longer represent 'Official' Unemployment Figures, but simply a measure of those people who are claiming the Jobseeker's Allowance unemployment-related benefit (i.e. the Claimant Count). The latest 'Official' unemployment figures are provided above.
Please refer to notes for important changes to the definition of 'Unemployment'.
